Photo taken May 2009. In the spring, the new shoots on the Tamarack trees develop these tiny "roses" - which harden and turn into brown/gray cones in the summer! The little cones keep their "rose" shape/appearance and can stay on the tree all through the winter, and sometimes even into the next spring & summer, until something knocks them off.
*Photo I took last winter of an old Tamarack "rose"/cone - *A similar photo taken by my friend Joyce/ -
